Becker taps into the sun: Photovoltaics for a sustainable future
Boenen, September 11, 2024 - The Becker Group is taking a significant step towards a sustainable future. A state-of-the-art photovoltaic system is currently being built at the headquarters in Bönen and will be put into operation this year. The solar system on the roof of the North Plant will then deliver an impressive 875,000 kWh per year - enough to supply almost 300 single-family homes with electricity for a year. [1]
The more than 2,500 solar modules have an output of almost 1,000 kWp. Becker uses 700,000 kWh of the annual production itself. This covers around a quarter of the electricity requirements at the northern plant - a strong signal for self-sufficiency and independence. The surplus of almost 200,000 kWh is fed into the power grid and thus actively contributes to the regional power supply.
This initiative is part of the Becker Group's consistent sustainability strategy and is in line with the objectives of the business development agency in the district of Unna (WFG). The plant will save Becker around 415 tons of CO2 emissions per year - a milestone on the way to halving its own CO2 emissions by 2030. Further measures such as the use of e-vehicles, LED lighting and E-bike charging stations underline the comprehensive approach to reducing the ecological footprint.
With this investment, the Becker Group is demonstrating that the transition to renewable energies is not only possible, but a central component of a future-proof corporate strategy. The parent company Klöckner & Co SE is also benefiting: The new plant supports the ambitious goal of achieving Net Zero for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040 and making the entire value chain climate-neutral by 2050.
